Saltwater angelfish can be purchased from pet shops or caught in the wild. Expect that those that came from the oceans will find it harder to adapt to a captive life and they might not thrive as well as those who are born and raised in an aquarium. Nonetheless, marine angelfish can survive being in captivity if you take care of them well.

They are considered a community fish but being in the cichlid family, may become aggressive towards smaller fish. They are usually fine when young but they will often get territorial as they get older. They will pair off, developing a strong nuclear family, and defend a territory in which to breed. A nice thing about Angelfish is that they don't burrow or disturb plants! Take caution to pick tankmates that are not known to be fin nippers. of How to Tell the Gender of an Angelfish was reviewed by on June 13, 2017.

We are a collection of Angelfish enthusiasts, hobbyists and breeders who are interested in the advancement of our hobby, through improvements in the quality of the fish we keep and breed, by employing the standards which this society has implemented and will continue to develop. The Angelfish Society is dedicated to the enhancement of the Angelfish through high quality breeding programs using standards established by the society. Our founding membership came from the Angelfish Forum where the idea evolved that a set of standards used throughout the hobby would benefit not only the Angelfish, but also the professional breeders, hobbyists and enthusiasts who enjoy these wonderful freshwater fish. Both the angelfish and the marine angelfish are known to be relatively difficult to keep in household aquariums, as both of angelfish require very specific water conditions. Angelfish are very susceptible to changes in the water such as salt levels and pH levels, and will often die if changes are too drastic. The angelfish has a more triangular shape and will generally only grow to a few inches in length. The marine angelfish can grow up to 12 inches (the same length as a big ruler) and generally have very brightly coloured markings but the exact depend on the angelfish species.Freshwater angelfish are native to the Amazon basin and are also found in the rivers running off it. angelfish inhabit the cleaner waters and prefer to be in temperatures between 25 and 30 degrees centigrade.Despite the fact that their names are the same, angelfish and marine angelfish are not thought to be closely related. The angelfish is a tropical of , distantly related to the found in specific lakes in . The marine angelfish are believed to be most closely related to the fish. The triangular shape of the angelfish, means that the angelfish is able to hide more easily amongst the aquatic plants in the water. Wild angelfish have very distinctive dark stripes that run vertically down their bodies, giving the angelfish the ability to blend in to its surroundings. angelfish usually breed for life and it is often found that if one of the angelfish parents dies, then the remaining angelfish parent has no interest in breeding.
