Like the rainbow trout, ’s orange flesh is due to carotenoid pigments from eating krill and other shellfish. This oily fish offers high amounts of protein, Omega-3s, and vitamin D. Popular varieties include Atlantic, Alaskan, Sockeye, and Coho. Many salmon are actually farmed—it’s the source for most consumed in the United States and Europe. Though they technically offer an even higher level of Omega-3s than wild, Hogan suggests to still opt for the latter. “Farmed salmon are fed highly processed, high-fat feed and contain more fat overall (think: more saturated fat and more Omega-6 fatty acids). When it comes to environmental friendliness—and, taste, in my opinion—wild Alaskan salmon is the winner,” she says. But don't forget about the canned variety. "Canned wild Alaskan salmon is often overlooked, but is still a great source of nutrients and a less expensive option," adds Hogan. Taste of the Wild Fish-only formula | The Cat Site

It's responsibly farmed and plentiful, making it one of the best fish you can eat. Or, try Asian carp, an invasive species with a similar taste to catfish that's out-competing wild catfish and endangering the Great Lakes ecosystem."It met 10 out of our 10 taste parameters," Norbert Sporns, president and chief executive officer of HQ Sustainable Maritime Industries (HQSM), told .

According to the news agency, HQSM has signed a joint development agreement with the Beijing division of Newly Weds Foods Inc. to market the "sea flavor" tilapia, which is processed to give it both the texture and flavor of wild-caught Alaska pollock, a northern Pacific whitefish that is the favored ingredient in fish sticks, fish fillets and similar products, as well as imitation crab meat.

In addition to the ease of processing and storing Alaska pollock, the fish is popular because of its mild flavor and low oil content. It has been called the largest remaining wild fish source in the world, and 3 million tons are caught every year. But in recent years, Alaska pollock fisheries appear to have begun to decline.

While the prices of wild-caught fish of all species continue to rise as fisheries around the world collapse from overfishing, pollution and climate change, the fast food industry -- one of the major purchasers of fish in the United States -- has continued to buy wild-caught fish for the simple reason that it tastes better.
