So then, what foods are best? A quality vegetable flake food (like those containing Spirulina) by itself is all that's needed. Note, Spirulina is rich in protein and should not be fed alone. If you use a pure Spirulina flake, mix it with another type of flake. By mixing the Spirulina with other ingredients, like fish meal, you will achieve a more balanced and desirable diet. Spirulina is an excellent source of Phycocyanin, which is the blue pigment derived from blue-green algae, but for yellow or red fishes to show their best color, additional vitamin sources must be provided. Furthermore, fish fed too much Spirulina, may in fact develop dark, irregular spots or stains along their sides, called Spirulina spots.

Wardley is the least expensive of the recommended brands and is also available in bulk, but the Wardley brand name lacks the range of "specialty flakes" that Aquarian and Tetra offer. As far as these specialty flakes go, the only one I have any use for are the "green" flakes that are high in vegetable matter. Most of these vegetable flakes contain Spirulina, which is a photosynthetic cyanobacterium (so Spirulina is not an alga as is generally assumed). Spirulina is quite high in protein and a great source of many amino acids that are otherwise difficult to acquire. Health food stores are full of the stuff. Spirulina flakes are just what you need for mollies and a host of other vegetarian fishes. Aquarian and Tetra also offer Spirulina enriched wafers that sink, which are very good for algae-eating bottom feeders like plecos. Our own “Pure Spirulina Flake” is so far removed from typical flakes that you will notice a difference immediately when you open it. It has a wonderful fresh “ocean green” aroma which your fish will know is different too. Tropheus and other herbivores can be given a diet of this flake with supplements of live food (Daphnia and newly hatched Brine Shrimp) and some Freeze Dried foods such as FD Plankton. This can also be mixed in with conventional Spirulina Flakes or other flake foods to boost the nutritional value of your feeds while providing a cost savings over using it 100%. The PURE SPIRULINA FLAKE is processed unlike other flake foods in that the Spirulina is not subjected to multiple processing steps thereby providing much higher carotenoid content. In other words; most of the nutrients which Spirulina is famous for, are left intact. Only the highest grade of raw Spirulina algae processed in an unique method provides a product unequaled by cut & paste imitatiors. Once you feed this product for a period of time you will feel guilty if you ever give them anything else!NEW UNIQUE PRODUCT: Not your typical fish food which is processed using fillers and ‘extra’ cost saving additives Our PURE 95% SPIRULINA ALGAE is a large conventional flake size suitable for a large variey of species. NO other commercially prepared foods approach this level of Spirulina concentration. Spirulina is generally the costliest ingredient in commercially prepared fish diets. Many flakes are called Spirulina Flake even if it has only 3% Spirulina in it. Some of the best have no more than 14% Spirulina! Often dyes are added to make it look ‘greener’. Many will also add fillers and fish meal or even rudiment animal byproducts and bloodmeal to boost protein levels.Spirulina fish foods like Spirulina Fish Food Flake Frenzy and other HBH products are the best spirulina fish food options for your pet. Spirulina fish food flakes are available from Pisces Pros for great prices. You can find bulk spirulina fish food or wholesale spirulina fish food, as well as individual containers depending on your need.
