One blood parrot in 53 gallon basementtank. 12/02/08 I was wondering if blood parrots do okay bythemselves and whether or not if a blood parrot could outgrow a 53gallon tank. Would keeping two of them stunt their growth, is it betterto keep just 1 in a 53 as a single specimen?. Do they need more then 1to feel happy? How big can these guys get? I heard anywhere from 8 to12, inches. What would be an ideal tank setup for this fish? PH, watertemp etc.? I have a sand substrate in place right now, and I want toresearch all about this/or any other type of fish i get. How often andhow much water should be changed per week? Thanks

The aquarium setup is one of the most important factors when discussing the care of blood parrots -- just like other aquarium fish species. Due to their large size, you'll want nothing smaller than a 50-gallon aquarium, bigger for more than one blood parrot. Use a soft substrate, such as sand, at the bottom of the tank. You'll also want to provide these sometimes shy cichlids with a variety of hiding places such as large rocks and bogwood. They also prefer live plants in the tank -- but use them in pots as the blood parrots may damage the root systems of your aquarium plants. Rocks and driftwood are excellent additions to a Parrot Cichlid's tank.
