Freshwater fish have a reputation of being less vibrant and colorful than their saltwater cousins. Instead of resorting to bright gravel, backgrounds, or lights to bring color to your aquarium, you can find species of fish that are attention grabbers. Before you settle for run-of-the mill freshwater fish, why not look into this list of top ten freshwater fish that can be just as beautiful as any tropical species.

Mollies are a versatile fish which can survive in both freshwater and saltwater aquariums, if the changes are made gradually. They are great for beginners because they are extremely hardy, and are not as aggressive as some other tropical fish. There are many too choose from, and the term ‘mollies’ is quite vague, since there are so many variations of size, color and optimal tank conditions. Colorful fish @ Colorful fish make a colorful aquarium and can provide many years of pleasure for the fish keeping hobbyist. Each fish keeper will no doubt have their own favorite colorful fish and if they were to be asked their top ten list each list would be different.

Here is a few colorful fish that we like.

The fancy guppy fish and especially the male have been bred to be a super colorful fish.

The mandarinfish is found in the Pacific from Australia to the Ryukyu Islands.

The emperor angelfish is found in the reef beds of the Indian and Pacific Oceans.

Swordtails are tropical freshwater fish.

The Siamese fighting fish, are probably the most colorful fish of all tropical freshwater fish.

A Lionfish is noted for its extremely long and separated spines. It is also referred to as the Turkey Fish, Scorpion or Fire Fish.

The clown triggerfish is found in the tropical Indo-Pacific reefs.

The cardinal tetra has a bright blue stripe running the length of its body.

Mantis shrimp are marine crustaceans and not of course fish but they are an outstanding beauty.

The moorish idol, is found in Indo-Pacific tropical to subtropical reefs and lagoons.

Lemon Cichlid is a narrow-bodied colorful fish that comes from South America.

Clownfish has about twenty-nine species and depending on species, they are overall yellow, orange, reddish, or blackish, and many show white bars or patches.

The Parrot fish that is named because of its bird-like beak use their beaks to crush and eat the small invertebrates that live in coral.

A nudibranch is a member of taxonomic clade rather than a fish and are often called "sea slugs". They are among the most colorful fish creatures on earth.

For example, you cannot match (i.e. without stressing or harming your fish) peaceful and aggressive fish, ones that like cooler water and ones that need higher temperatures etc. Common sense stuff!
