The little filter that came with the SOLO desk top 5 gal aquarium, is a combo with the pump. The filter includes, a carbon filter and a filter pad ( it's a little sponge). The filter maintenance according to the company needs to be rinse once a week under fresh water and the filter pad and carbon kit to be replaced every 60 days. i have the aquarium since beggining of August, so i just changed the filter. So maybe according to you i should not change the water so often but maybe every 2 weeks or so?? Just leave it alone for a while whitout any ammonia treatment?? Well i can always try that and see what will happen. The little Guppies (3) are still fine, no sign of distress since i check them every day. They also eat fine once a day. I don't overfeed them like i did in the beggining. Just enough and doing fine right now.

Here are some very simple points as to when NOT to medicate your fish (this includes organic remedies, as these too have side effects, despite the popularity and aura of "natural" around these treatments):/p>As noted earlier, water changes before each dose are important to the effectiveness of treatment. The other aspect which may be important is the use of backup bio filtration. This is especially important when using medications such as Erythromycin which is hard on aerobic gram positive bacteria and nitrifying bacteria.Having on hand separate sponge filter, bio media, even gravel in a healthy tank that can be added as needed to the tank under treatment, can go a long way in making a treatment effective.
A soaring ammonia level in an aquarium can cancel the benefits of any treatment. I recommend testing ammonia during a treatment, especially with Erythromycin and Tetracyclines.
Then add this bio media at the first sign of an ammonia increase.
If this is not possible or in addition the above suggestion, the use of SeaChem Stability or similar facultative bacterial aids should be added approximately 12 hours after each medication treatment dosing to aid in maintaining your bio filter Jump to Treatments for Elevated Ammonia: Hydroxymethanesulfonate - It is a known ammonia binder16 patented for aquarium use by John F.

If ammonia levels exceeding 1 ppm (parts per million), as indicated by a specific instrument, start treatment immediately. Lowering water pH will be very helpful for the health of fish. The same effect it will have to change half the water (make sure you put the water in the aquarium has the same temperature as the fish are). It may be necessary to change the water several times to lower the ammonia. The little filter that came with the SOLO desk top 5 gal aquarium, is a combo with the pump. And if your aquarium uses zeolite to cut down on ammonia, effects may be reversed during a salt treatment. Always remove sensitive invertebrates and zeolite before adding any type of salt.
